The evolution of the Pyramid... (or building bricks for big boys)

2009.11.02
The origins... Imhotep's design at Saqqara...

Ooops, that's not worked out how I thought...

Aha... getting there - the sides of this one are straighter...

Mmmm, the dimensions still seem not quite right...

But the size is gettting bigger (can you see the people half way up?)

Cracked it!! Yee hah!

Ok, don't show off now.

Over the course of a century or so those wily Egyptians figured out how to perfect the pyramid.

It started with the stepped pyramid like that of Djoser at Saqqara built by the genius Imhotep. Then came the slightly unsuccessful attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid at Dharshur - the so-called "Bent" pyramid of Sneferu. But within 20 years he had worked out the mechanics of building them, resulting in the Red Pyramid nearby and finally the famous set of three at Giza by Khufu, Chephren and Menkaure.

Close up the effort required to build these becomes self-evident - 3 million blocks of stone weighing tonnes each... and the crane hadn't been invented.

You figure it out!

KerBear So impressive. Ancient Egyptian has always fascinated me - absolutely loved everything about it. Unfortuantely when I moved on to University they didn't offer any courses in it... so I stuck with the Ancient Greek and Roman. Second best.

Allegra wonderful light. know that if you take the sand in the hand and close your hand into a fist and drop it ... the grains of sand are arranged perfectly like a pyramid?

NellyBly Fantastic photos....they were pretty smart and worked hard is all I know :-)

longimanus :-) I`ve read I think at least dozens of theories about building the pyramids... some of the most bold ones are that they were built by aliens of that ancient egyptians used the tidal changes of the nile so the boats "were lifted" to their destination with their cargo, the giant stones. however they managed, they were for sure big boys, and today`s "big boys" for sure could not repeat such wonder. have you tried exploring the pyramids while riding a camel ? ;-) no, your pics would not be so sharp...

smbunation Excellent.

tedbarlow There are many references in ancient scripture that can be interpreted as alien activity or spaceship activity. But maybe the 'flying wheel' at the beginning of Ezekiel was some sort of lifting device and the idea of 'wheels within wheels' is totally compatible with modern lifting and energy saving technology. To say the crane hadn't been invented seems a little non-sensical considering the dimensions of the architechture :-)) Whether the cranes were invented by man or something other is open to spectulation.
There is another theory that points to the pyramids not being built by man...
They were built by women!! ;-)

dontblink It is amazing what some of the ancient cultures in totally different parts of the world were able to accomplish.
It must be pretty amazing to view these in person.

Widcat I can't imagine how awesome it must be to see the pyramids in person. #6 is wonderful with all the stones scattered around in the foreground. What a perfectly blue sky!

DancingDolphin Fascinating isn't it. They're on my "must see" list. Incredible light in the last shot!

girafferacing It's beyond belief really, isn't it - they would be a great undertaking today with modern technology. I still find it staggering to think they built these thousands of years ago.
