Summer Pavilion...

2009.07.29

This is the Summer Pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery.

Each year an architect is invited to design and build a temporary pavilion for the grounds of the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens – this year it is by a Japanese partnership SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa). I love it. It flows around the grounds like the Serpentine itself and seems to float above its metal pole supports. The canopy itself seems to be of polished aluminium and reflects everyone walking or sitting beneath it. The few walls are of curved glass and the whole thing just feels light both in terms of design and mood.

It just makes you want to smile and that can’t be bad.

smbunation That is a strange but interesting design. I like it. I wonder how it would be during a lightning storm though.

TIM927 it really creates a different sense of space, it reminds me a plane propeller, does it look similar? I like it :)

Lynda Very different.

redro I like it too. It looks airy and works well with the surrounding. The reflections on the ceiling ad space and light. All shots are good ...I love # 4, 6 and 7 the most, because they look weird... like a split image of an underwater shot taken at the water level in 4, a strange twist of reality on the Moebius strip in 6 and funny upside down people glued to the ceiling in 7. I believe it makes you smile :)
I also wish I could see it from above to get the shape of it.
No such shot ?
....Dare to ;) ?

Unchained A really graceful and open space, fitting perfectly with the surroundings. Wouldn't it take off with a strong wind?

burbulz I prefer #5 & #7 (I know, I'm greedy).
the feeling must be like sitting underwater - just without holding your breath.

Widcat What a wonderful thing! You could take pictures in there all day! I favorited one of them so I can come back to the whole set to look at again.

girafferacing These make me want to jump on a train with my camera now - what an amazing building! I lived very close to the Serpentine Gallery as a student but of course this wasn't there then. Must make a detour to it when I'm in London next. Great captures - wonderful angles and perspectives. :-)
