Seldom seen kid...

2009.07.22

I had just got out of my very-air-conditioned 4x4 and was standing on a high dune, starting to swelter in the sun. Then this kid seemed to appear out of nowhere, put his head down and began to run up the side of the dune towards me, grasping his handful of trinkets to sell.

So often one can become inured to the sight of hawkers in countries one visits; it becomes easy to adopt a callous mask of indifference... it's a self-defence mechanism as much as anything. One begins not to see the person behind the thrusting hands and the demands for money.

As I watched him, he suddenly stopped and looked up at me and I saw the Teddy Bear motif on his shirt - he couldn't have been more than four or five years old and his appearance seemed so at odds with his already hard life.

He trudged the final few metres up the dune towards me and held up his fistful of bracelets. I shook my head but gave him the money anyway... he could keep his merchandise for another day.

As far as I was concerned the price was cheap for a picture I like and the prompt to think rather than ignore.

redro I'm glad you didn't disappoint him, as you mentioned there weren't too many tourists at the time you visited so the boy was very hopeful when he saw you.
He will remember you as much as you remember him, I'm sure...You must have made his day :))!
If we pay attention enough we could spot the fakes from the really unfortunate who only try to make a living in a hard life.
And you saw it.
And captured it - very moving....
The picture says it all.

revenant The title got me (I liked the album), but your story clinched it - and I totally agree with your value for money calculation. In Greece, where there are many Roma children selling paper tissues, etc., I find it very hard to get them to keep their 'merchandise' - they don't beg; they trade. I used to argue with my ex-wife (no surprise, I suppose), who is a Roma educationalist about the practicalities of *not* buying things off child traders. Of course, she was right in absolute terms. Not buying won't put them (back) in school, but when you're faced with a kid who's been dealt a crappy hand in life, what do you do? I pay up.
I'd be tempted to up the exposure a bit just to enhance the blinding hot atmosphere.
